How to Monitor Your Shopify Store Uptime

Shopify goes down. Your revenue doesn't have to wait for you to notice.

Shopify monitoring: what to check (storefront, checkout, cart, admin), why Shopify's status page isn't enough, and how to set up alerts.

Why Shopify stores need independent monitoring

Shopify is a hosted platform, which creates a false sense of security — surely they monitor their own infrastructure, right? They do, but their outages still happen, and their status page (status.shopify.com) is updated by humans, not automatically. When Shopify has a checkout outage, the first sign is often a drop in orders, not a status page update. Independent monitoring tells you the moment your store stops responding, not whenever someone at Shopify gets around to posting an incident.

There's also the app layer. Shopify stores run third-party apps (reviews, analytics, popups, payment gateways) that can break independently of Shopify itself. A broken app script can tank your page load time or break the add-to-cart button while Shopify's infrastructure is perfectly healthy. HTTP and keyword monitoring on your storefront catches these.

What to monitor on a Shopify store

Monitor four things at minimum. First, the storefront homepage with an HTTP check — if it returns anything other than 200, something is wrong. Second, the product page (pick a stable product URL) with a keyword check for the "Add to cart" button text — if the button disappears, the cart flow is broken even if the page loads. Third, the cart page (`/cart`) with an HTTP check — a 503 or timeout here means customers can't check out. Fourth, your SSL certificate with an SSL monitor — Shopify manages certs, but a misconfigured custom domain can still serve an expired or mismatched certificate.

Don't bother monitoring the Shopify admin (`/admin`) — it's behind authentication and will return redirects that look like failures to a simple HTTP check. If you want admin-side monitoring, use Shopify's own admin API with an authenticated request, which is a more advanced setup.

Setting up alerts that actually reach you

Shopify outages happen during business hours and at 2 AM alike. Email alerts are necessary but not sufficient — you want a push notification or a channel you're already watching. SurePing alerts via email, SMS, Telegram, and webhooks. Route a webhook to your Slack or Discord store-ops channel so the whole team sees the alert, not just the founder's inbox.

Set a reasonable check interval. Shopify stores don't need 15-second checks — a 1-minute or 5-minute interval catches outages fast enough to act on without generating excessive requests against your store. SurePing's free tier includes 55 monitors at 5-minute intervals, which is more than enough for a single Shopify store with 4-6 critical URLs.
