What Is SSL Certificate Monitoring? Expiry & Trust Checks

SSL certificate monitoring checks the TLS certificate served by an HTTPS endpoint. It reads the certificate chain, extracts the expiry date, the hostname it covers, and the issuing authority, then alerts you before the certificate expires — typically 30, 14, and 7 days out.

Without it, certificate renewal is a ticking bomb. Let's Encrypt certificates expire every 90 days, paid certs annually. If auto-renewal silently fails (cron job stopped, DNS challenge broke, ACME account key rotated), the cert expires and every browser shows a scary warning to your users. SSL monitoring turns that into a fixable problem instead of an incident.

Expiry is the headline check, but a good SSL monitor also validates the trust chain. A certificate can be technically valid but rejected by browsers if the intermediate cert isn't served, if the hostname doesn't match, or if the cert is signed by an untrusted authority. These failures look like downtime to users even though the server is running.

You also want to know about upcoming changes: a cert renewed with a different chain, a downgrade from EV to OV, or a switch to a new CA.
