Synthetic monitoring (also called transaction monitoring or browser monitoring) runs a real browser — or a scripted simulation of one — through a multi-step user journey: load the homepage, search for a product, add it to cart, proceed to checkout. Each step is asserted, and the whole transaction is timed. If any step fails, the monitor reports which one.
This is a level above HTTP monitoring. A single URL check tells you the homepage returns 200. A synthetic check tells you whether a customer can actually complete a purchase. It catches broken JavaScript, failed XHR calls, render-blocking dependencies, and stateful bugs that only surface across a sequence of requests.
Synthetic checks surface problems that no single-request monitor can see: a login flow where the auth API returns 200 but the session cookie isn't set, a checkout where the payment iframe fails to load, a SPA where the initial HTML is fine but the client-side render crashes on a specific route. They also give you a real-user-experience metric: total time to complete a critical journey, not just server response time.
The trade-off is cost and complexity. Each synthetic check runs a headless browser, which is heavier than an HTTP request and more expensive to run at high frequency. Most teams reserve synthetic monitoring for the 3-5 most critical user journeys and use cheaper HTTP/keyword checks for the long tail of endpoints.
SurePing does not currently offer synthetic transaction monitoring. Our checks are single-request: HTTP, keyword, ping, port, SSL, and heartbeat. If your critical path is a multi-step transaction (login → dashboard → action), you'll want a dedicated synthetic monitoring tool for that journey and SurePing for the broad coverage of every individual endpoint.
This is an honest gap. Synthetic monitoring done well requires a browser execution environment per region, and we've chosen to keep the platform simple and affordable rather than ship a half-baked version. If multi-step transactions are your primary need, pair SurePing with a synthetic-focused tool.
SurePing includes this monitor type on every plan — including the free tier.
