Ping monitoring uses ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) echo requests to check whether a host is reachable at the network layer. It sends an echo request and waits for an echo reply — if the reply arrives, the host is online and responding at the IP level.
Unlike HTTP or port monitoring, ping doesn't test any specific service. It only tests whether the host itself is reachable. This makes it useful for monitoring servers, routers, IoT devices, and any host where you want to know "is this machine on the network?"
